You know, I saw The Aviator a few weeks ago (I gave it 4/5 stars), and they kept talking about how large Hughes' Spruce Goose was. I thought 'Sure, for the 40's it must have been huge - but surely long since surpassed by today's modern airliners.'
So I did a little Googling and constructed this schematic:

The Airbus A380, just launched last month, has been in the news as the largest commercial airliner ever to go into service.
The Spruce Goose has a wingspan fully 120 feet broader. The thing is a flippin' monster. And it's 60 years old.
